The Impact of Urban Illumination on Health and the Natural Environment

Have you ever asked a 10-year-old if they have seen the Orion constellation, or if they can determine directions by looking at the sky? Or, since they know that the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west, then in which direction does the Earth rotate on its axis? Chances are, that most of the children living in urban areas have no idea, and this is not even their fault! 

It is rather unfortunate that the future of our country is growing up in an era where they encounter more lights on the street than stars in the sky during a casual stroll around the neighbourhood in the evening. We are so focused on a bright city “skyline” that we have forgotten the calm and serenity offered by the dark, star-studded sky. But subconsciously, the human mind yearns for it.
