ISRO successfully launched India’s third moon mission — Chandrayaan-3 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota, on 14 July 2023 at 2:35 PM (IST). The first and second orbit-raising manoeuvres were successfully performed on 15 & 17 July 2023 respectively. Recently on 18 July 2023, the third orbit-raising manoeuvre (Earth-bound perigee firing) was performed successfully from ISTRAC/ISRO, Bengaluru, and the mission is on schedule according to ISRO.

Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. The propulsion module has Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth (SHAPE) payload to study the spectral and Polari metric measurements of Earth from the lunar orbit.

Chandrayaan-3 consists of an indigenous Lander Module (LM), Propulsion Module (PM) and a Rover with the objective of developing and demonstrating new technologies required for interplanetary missions.

The mission objectives of Chandrayaan-3 are:

•    To demonstrate Safe and Soft Landing on Lunar Surface
•    To demonstrate Rover roving on the moon and
•    To conduct in-situ scientific experiments.
